Rose Joy

About Rose Joy: Rose Joy is an artist based in Memphis, Tennessee whose work explores themes of storytelling, nostalgia, hope, acceptance, and belonging. Through narratives rooted in imagination and emotional sincerity, she encourages viewers to embrace their imperfections, differences, disabilities, and difficult life experiences as meaningful parts of who they are. By celebrating authenticity and human complexity, her work advocates for self-acceptance and compassion toward ourselves and others. Working primarily in ceramics, Rose Joy creates handmade miniature characters, often personified animals, alongside larger figurative sculptures. Drawing on a love of character design and narrative, she approaches each piece as a distinct personality with its own story to tell. Through playfulness, whimsy, and emotional depth, her work invites moments of connection while fostering empathy and understanding. Rose Joy is currently pursuing her art education at the University of Memphis. Her work was selected for the University of Memphis 42nd Annual Juried Student Exhibition, where she received the Dixon Gallery and Garden Award, and was also exhibited at Off the Walls Arts in Memphis as part of the Planet Luminarus exhibition. She has further developed her studio practice through an internship with Memphis artist Becky Ziemer.

Cute Misfits Series

Cute Misfits Series

About the Series: I’m Rose Joy, the hands and heart behind Cute Misfits, a growing world of original characters who are tender, awkward, brave, anxious, hopeful, and beautifully imperfect. Each Misfit comes to life through handmade ceramic figurines and pieces inspired by them. Every piece is directly inspired by a character’s personality and lived experience, turning story into something tangible and often functional. These aren’t polished mascots. They navigate anxiety. They feel different. They adapt, dream, and persist. They reflect real human experiences—resilience wrapped in softness. Cute Misfits exists to make difference visible and dignified. In a world that rewards polish, we celebrate honesty. This is a world seeking to create alongside a community and grounded in one belief: what sets you apart may be your greatest strength. The mission behind Cute Misfits is grounded in real data and real need. Approximately 29% of adults in the United States (U.S.) live with a disability, and nearly 60% of individuals experiencing a mental health condition delay or avoid treatment due to stigma. These numbers reflect not just statistics, but millions of people navigating judgment, shame, or isolation. Cute Misfits exists to challenge these narratives. We aim to normalize difference, reduce stigma, and reinforce the truth that what makes us different is often what makes us strong. Cute Misfits— where every quirk has a place, and every story truly matters.
